Behind every Soul Rug is a woman with a story. Our artisans are Amazigh (Berber) women from villages across the High Atlas and Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. They are mothers, grandmothers, and young women carrying forward a tradition that has been passed down for over 3,000 years.
Weaving is not just a craft for these women — it is a language. Before the Amazigh people had written script, women told their stories through the symbols and patterns of their rugs. Diamonds for protection, zigzags for water, crosses for the stars — each motif holds deep meaning.
At Soul Rugs, we work directly with over 50 artisan families. There are no middlemen, no factories, no mass production. We visit the villages regularly, build personal relationships, and ensure every weaver is paid fairly and directly for her work.
Our artisans work from their homes, on their own schedule, using techniques learned from their mothers and grandmothers. Some of our weavers have been practicing their craft for over 40 years.
When you purchase a Soul Rug, you are not just buying a beautiful piece for your home — you are supporting a living tradition, empowering a woman, and preserving a culture that has survived for millennia.
Every knot tells a story. Every rug has a soul.
