The Origin
Why Soul Rugs exists
The most beautiful rugs in the world are made by women whose names no one knows.
In the souks of Marrakech, in the markets of Fes, in the homes of New York and Los Angeles — Amazigh rugs are everywhere, admired and purchased. But the women who spend weeks weaving them remain invisible, rarely compensated fairly, their names never attached to their work.
We started Soul Rugs to change that relationship. To build a direct bridge between the artisans of the Atlas Mountains and the homes around the world that deserve their work — and to ensure that every woman who creates a Soul Rug is known, compensated fairly, and proud of where her piece is going.

More than 90% of our rugs are made to order. When you place your commission, your rug does not yet exist. Within 48 hours, we assign it to an artisan who begins weaving it by hand in her village in Morocco. Weeks later, it arrives at your door — a piece made specifically for you, by a specific woman, in a specific place.
That specificity is the soul of what we do.
In the Amazigh language, there is no word for “artist.”
The woman who weaves is simply called the one who knows.

The Women
The hands that carry
three thousand years.
Amazigh women have been weaving in the Atlas Mountains for over three thousand years. Not as a hobby, not as a pastime — as a language. A way of encoding the world. A form of cultural memory that survives in wool when everything else is forgotten.
Their technique is passed down entirely through oral tradition and demonstration. No written patterns. No instruction manuals. A grandmother shows a granddaughter how to hold the yarn, how to calculate the tension, how to read the pattern emerging in her hands. Each artisan has a distinctive hand — an invisible signature in the way she ties her knots, spaces her rows, and interprets the symbols her family has woven for generations.

The Name
Why “Soul Rugs”
Soul
We chose the word “soul” with full intention. In most languages — French, Arabic, Tamazight — the soul is the invisible part of a living thing that persists. The part that cannot be replicated.
A handmade rug carries the soul of its maker in a way that no machine-made object ever can. The slight asymmetry in the weave. The particular way the knots are tied. The specific tension in the wool. These are not imperfections — they are the fingerprint of a human being.
When you commission a Soul Rug, you are inviting that fingerprint into your home. You are choosing to live with something that took weeks of patient, skilled work by a specific person whose hands you will never shake but whose work will be with you every day.

We kept the word “rugs” because we believe in honesty about what we make. We are not a gallery. We are not a concept store. We are a company that connects extraordinary weavers with people who want extraordinary things in their homes.
A rug is walked upon. It anchors a room. It is touched every day. It ages with you. There is nothing more domestic, and nothing more intimate, than the object under your feet.

The Creation Process
From commission to
your front door.
You Commission
You choose your collection, your dimensions, and your finish. From this moment, your rug exists as an intention. It will be made for no one else.
We Assign an Artisan
Within 48 hours of your order, we match your rug with an artisan based on her speciality, current workload, and the tradition your piece belongs to. She receives the commission and begins preparing her loom.
The Weaving Begins
Working on a traditional wooden loom, the artisan weaves your rug row by row. For a medium-sized piece, this takes three to five weeks of full-day work. There is no way to accelerate this process without reducing its quality. We never do.
Finishing & Quality
When the weaving is complete, the rug is trimmed, washed with cold mountain water, and dried flat in shade. We inspect every piece before it leaves Morocco.
Shipped from Marrakech
Your rug is carefully rolled, wrapped, and shipped directly from our atelier via DHL Express. It arrives within 5–7 business days after dispatch, with a hand-written card from the artisan who made it. Total lead time: 5–6 weeks.

Amazigh Heritage
A culture that speaks
through wool.
The Amazigh people — also known as Berbers — are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa, with a history that predates the Arab conquest of the 7th century by thousands of years. Their culture, language, and traditions have survived invasions, assimilation pressures, and the erasure of colonial rule.
Weaving is one of the most important ways this culture has preserved itself. The geometric symbols in Amazigh rugs are not decorative. They are a visual language — a system of symbols encoding history, belief, cosmology, and identity.

The Material
Every Soul Rug is made with wool from the sheep that graze in the Atlas Mountains. At altitude, Atlas sheep develop a fleece that is naturally lanolin-rich, extremely durable, and soft without being fragile. It is hypoallergenic, naturally stain-resistant, and improves with age.
No synthetic fibers. No shortcuts. The same wool that has been used in Amazigh weaving for three thousand years.
